Bobby Bartels -- former Ring 8 President . . .  Exciting Queens welterweight and junior middleweight who fought from 1958 to 1966 . . . scored first round knockouts in his first two pro fights . . . . Considers 1964 fourth round knockout of Rufus Mack, in which legendary Joe Louis refereed, among his greatest ring moments. Posted wins over Danny Garcia and Lenny Mangiapane . . . Henry Brent -- Fiery flyweight from Brooklyn known as "Hot Pepper" Won USBA flyweight crown with 9th round stoppage of Mark Pacheco in 1982 . . . Went 12 tough rounds with NABF champ and world title challenger Joey Olivo in 1984. Now runs the New Bed Stuy Boxing center.

Johnny Britenbruck -- Tough boxer from Williamsburg, Brooklyn . . .  Boxed in the Marines. Beat Jimmy Herring at the Ridgewood Grove Arena . . .In dramatic display of courage, knocked out Gene Salisbury at Ft. Hamilton Arena after spending an hour in frigid waters that afternoon trying to save a drowning boy. 

Pete Brodsky -- Long Island light heavy who campaigned as a pro from 1978-82 . . . Impressive amateur ledger includes '69 GG quarterfinalist and finalist of '71 GG . . . Matt Farrago -- Known as the "Beta Bomber" Rugged Long Island 154 lber . . . A regular attraction at the Felt Forum in the mid '80's . . . Battled with Mike Peoples, Pat Prisco, Bobby Joe Young, Francisco DeJesus and Bobby Joe Young . . . Graduated from Cortlandt State . . . Is pursuing a career in acting .

Roosevelt Farrell -- a talented welterweight who fought as an amateur in the early '60's . . . Fought for New York Parks and recreation Department. Trained by Vic Zimet.

Carmine Fatta -- Tough lightweight who hailed from the lower East Side and Brooklyn . . . Reached Semifinal in Gloves in 1938 and 39 . . . Fought professionally until 1947 although his career was interrupted by service in the US Army. A veteran of more than 70 fights, Carmine was ranked 10th in the lightweight division in 1943. He fought all comers, including champions Beau Jack and Tippy Larkin.

Isreal Garcia -- NY Golden Gloves Champion in 1997 . . . Scored a first round KO in professional debut. Is a protégé of Ring 8's Jackie Tonawanda . . . Is 10-1 with 7 KO's as a pro . . .

Doug Jones -- Fought the best light heavyweights and heavyweights the division had to offer in a ten year career. Challenged for the world title twice, losing decisions to Harold Johnson at light heavy and Ernie Terrell at Heavy . . . In 1962, knocked out future champion Bob Foster . . . Billy Kilroy -- A blond boxer-puncher . . .Middleweight who campaigned in the late 1940's Knocked out young Rocky Castellani in 1946. Later became a Police Officer.

Herbie Kronowitz -- Tough Brooklyn boxer-puncher . . . Achieved a world ranking as a middleweight in 1947 . . . Fought in the golden age of the middleweight division. Engaged in 86 pro fights and was never stopped. Defeated Harold Green, Billy Walker, Jerry Fiorello and Pete Mead . . . Jake LaMotta turned him down after witnessing the Green fight . . .Worked as a referee from 1955-84 . . . Is on the Ring 8 Board of Directors.

Juan Laporte -- former WBC featherweight champion . . . Captured the crown with a 10 Round KO of Mario Miranda in 1982 . . . Defended titles with wins over Ruben Castillo and Johnny De la Rosa . . . Went toe to toe with some of the finest fighters of his era, including Salvatore Sanchez, Eusebio Pedrosa, Wilfredo Gomez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Azumah Nelson, Kostya Tszyu and Barry McGuigan . . . One of the best chins in boxing history.

Artie Levine -- Dangerous 1940's middle and light heavyweight contender . . .  Sugar Ray Robinson said Levine hit him with the hardest punch of his career . . . Had Sugar Ray down for 21 second long count before Robinson KO'd him in the 10th in 1946 . . . Joey Manfro -- Aggressive welterweight. Posted early four round draws with Billy Graham, Johnny Greco and Moe Weiss . . .Had 41 pro bouts . . . Fought Charley Fusari, Pat Scanlon and Morris Reif.

Lenny Mangiapane -- A hard punching, crowd pleasing jr. middleweight from Corona, Queens. A staple at Sunnyside Gardens . . . Won 10 of his first 11 bouts, including 6 by knockout . . .Twin brother Joey was also a fighter . . .  Worked with Golden Gloves champion Claudio Hildago.

Pat Marcune -- 1950's featherweight contender . . .Holds victories over Lauro Salas, Eddie Compo and Billy Bossio . . . Was stopped in the 10th Round by legendary world champion Willie Pep in 1953.

James "Buddy" McGirt -- Held IBF jr. middleweight and WBC welterweight championship belts . . . Grew up in Brentwood and began professional career in 1982 . . . Long Island's first world champion . . . Kayoed Harold Davis in one round and beat Simon Brown in title bout . . . Battled Pernell Whitaker in pair of classic showdowns. Retired in 1997.

Joe Miceli -- Among the most popular fighters in boxing's TV era of the 1950's . . . Of his 122 career bouts, 45 were televised. Upset the likes of Luther Rawlings and Pierre Langlois . . .Earned a top ten rating as a lightweight and welterweight . . .  Fought 12 world champions, ranging from lightweight to middleweight, but never fought for a world title . . .Defeated the likes of Ike Williams, Johnny Saxton, Wallace (Bud) Smith and Virgil Akins . . . Fought a draw with Joey Giardello.  

Alex Miteff -- Argentinean heavyweight contender . . . Active from '56 to '61 . . .Won the 1954 Pan Am games . . . Fought all the top contenders early in his career, including Eddie Machen, Zora Folley, George Chuvalo, Henry Cooper, Mike DeJohn, Cleveland Williams, Nino Valdez, and in 1961, Cassius Clay.

Willie Munoz -- One of New York's top welterweight prospects '64 to '69 . . .Unbeaten in first 19 fights, including 11 KO's .  . . In 1968, beat Percy Pugh and drew with Miguel Barretto . . . Dropped decision to Pete Toro the following year.

Tony Napoli -- A barnstorming boxer who fought under the name Tony Rio in Albuquerque, New Mexico . . . Had a 17-4 record and once trained with future light heavyweight Bob Foster . . . Boxed in Air Force in '56 and enjoyed a successful amateur career . . Today does volunteer work with U.S. veterans.

Frank Nardizzi -- Good boxer-puncher from Corona Queens . . . Once trained by the legendary Dan Florio . . . Often sparred with Randy Sandy . . .A junior welterweight and welterweight of the 1950's. Fought the likes of Dom Marchese, Charlie Salas, (brother of champ Lauro Salas) and knocked out Herb Dudley.

Charley Noel -- 1940's featherweight out of Jersey City . . . Fought everyone . . . Went the distance with former champs Henry Jeffra and Phil Terranova and future champs Jimmy Carter and Sandy Saddler.

John Pavlovich -- Began career in 1934 at the Trinity Boxing Club in Brooklyn . . . Posted identical 30-4 records as a pro and amateur . . .. Turned pro in 1935 . . . Beat Maxie Long on August 30, 1937 at Yankee Stadium on the under card of the Joe Louis-Tommy Farr heavyweight title fight . . . Trained at Stillmans Gym under the tutelage of Ray Arcel and Steve Klaus. Boxing ran in the family . . . John's brother Willie a fighter who sparred with Billy Conn.

Edgar Perkins -- Two time NY Golden Gloves Champion . . . Captured the 112lb Sub-Novice title in '51 and the 118lb Open title in 1952 . . . After the '52 finals, shared the back page of the Daily News with Floyd Patterson . . . Tabbed as another Sugar Ray Robinson . . . Turned pro under the management of George Gainsford.

Jackie Tonawanda -- First female boxing champion in history . . .held the light heavyweight title for 17 years . . . Sued New York State Athletic Commission for the right to fight professionally . . . Fought at Madison Square Garden in 1975 . . .  Was trained at Gleason's Gym by Freddie Brown and Davey Vasquez . . . KO'd a male kick boxer at the Garden . . Has sparred with Muhammed Ali . . . Henny Wallitsch  -- Colorful and rugged heavyweight who campaigned from 1957 until 1966 . . .Had local shootouts with Bobby Halpern, Bartolo Soni and Jim Beattie . . . In 1960, halted unbeaten Swedish prospect Lennart Risberg at the Polo Grounds in the semi-final of the second Patterson Johansson title fight . . . Fought and lost to future WBA heavyweight champion Ernie Terrell . . . Is on Ring 8's Board of Directors.

Izzy Zerling --- Grew up an orphan and on cold nights when he couldn't find a place to sleep he'd often spend a night in the local gym just to stay warm . . . A classy featherweight from the lower East Side, fought pro in the 1930's . . . Trained by legendary Freddie Brown and fought the likes of Harry Bauman, Willie Johnson, Willie Gold, Phil Siriani, Dominic Barone . . . When he retired from boxing he opened G&S Sporting Goods and manufactured boxing equipment that is still recognized worldwide . . .His greatest contributions came through the tireless service he put into the Izzy Zerling Youth Centers in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Has worked with numerous world champions, such as Kevin Kelley, Jake Rodriguez, Lennox Lewis, Junior Jones, Bruce Seldon, Naseem Hamed, Regilio Tuur, Lonnie Bradley, Oscar De La Hoya, , and Tom Johnson . . . One of boxing's last links to the Grammercy Gym . . . Recognized for Long and Meritorious service by the boxing Writers of America.

Vic Zimet -- One of the last old-school trainers . . . After an amateur career, in which he appeared in the 1936 Golden Gloves, Vic began handling the careers of his peers at Beechers Gym in Brooklyn . . .Developed 17 New York Golden Glove champions . . . Instrumental in launching the careers of Al "Bummy" Davis, Bernie Freidkin, Curley Nichols, Paul Klang, Billy Daniels and David Sears . . . In 1984, Vic was the assistant ringside manager at the Olympic games in Los Angeles . . . Coach of the New York Parks and Recreation Department for 27 years, and president of the Metropolitan Amateur Boxing Federation from 1978 to 1983 . . . Joe Dwyer -- Middleweight champ of the U.S. Navy's 6th fleet in 1958 . . . Had 59 amateur bouts and won 56 . . .
